Pierre Simon - Bowmaker?
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 13:16 BST (UK) »
I have come across Pierre Simon who had a daughter called:

Mary Jane Charlotte Simon - 1830-1908.

I was wondering if Pierre Simon was the famous bow maker who was born in 1808?

The date that i have for Pierre is c.1807? - close enough: he married: Charlotte Douglas 1797-1868.

Can someone please help me with this? regards, genealogistsykes

This is a picture of Pierre.

You haven't given a p.o.b. for Pierre ,wife or daughter??

Pierre Simon the bow maker -according to several sites - was French b.1 Dec 1808 died 12 Dec 1881
Worked in Paris . he had a brother, Barthelemy -also a bowmaker- who was 2 yrs younger than Peirre
Pierre used the name "Paul Simon" in later life

If Mary Jane Simon married in the UK, her marriage cert would give her father's name and occupation.

Are there any clues in the portrait? It seems an odd choice of background for someone involved in making bows for musical instruments  :-\

What is the object above the button on his jacket? Is the portrait dated? Do his clothes help to date it?

musical instruments?

looks like he's in the French Navy?  :)
No the portrait is not dated, on peerage it didn't give me any information regarding him apart from that he married Charlotte Douglas blah blah blah and gave his picture.

He is the grandfather of Maud Douglas Green (nee. Blakiston) Marie Jane Charlotte Simon married John Richard Blakiston who is the father of Maud.

Maud was born in 1860 and died in 1960  :)

There was a Pierre-Simon LaPlace who was a mathematician and astronomer -- could this portrait be of him, given that he looks as though he might be holding a telescope?

You seems to have mixed up a few things in your 'research.'

According to the Peerage.com "Pierre Simon was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.). He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)."
http://thepeerage.com/p17120.htm#i171199
As with all research this information should only be used as a guide.

So, he was not a French bowmaker, in the French Navy, etc.

The portrait, on the other hand, is not that of a doctor or bowmaker but of a man with some maritime associations (eyepiece he's holding, ship at sea in background). Where did you find the portrait and was there any further information with it?

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

i cant remember where i found the picture, i think it was on peerage as it gave info about his wife and showed this picture

The only information that came with the picture was: Pierre Simon and then it had his wife and then his daughter etc.
