Farrell Ancestors
« on: Friday 05 August 11 21:10 BST (UK) »

Looking for my grandmother's family in Manchester.  Born in 1902 she was Mary Ellen Farrell. She was married in St Patrick's Chapel, Livsey St, Colleyhurst in 1925.  At this time she was living at 42 Alexandra Place. Her father's name was John Edward Farrell, dont have a name for her mum but possibly Mary and I believe there was a connection with Kilkenny. She was one of 10 children apparently. She had brothers by the name of Dominic (known as Danny), Patrick, John, Joseph and a sister Catherine (Kitty) and one called Eleanor. I believe that later (in the 60s) Dominic and John lived together somewhere in the Miles Platting area. Am I ringing any bells for anyone? It would be great to hear from you if you have any info

Hi

As both Mary & Dominic were born after 1901 - have you checked the 1911 census for the family?

There is only one marriage in Lancs on freebmd for a John Edward Farrell - 1899 Prestwich  but spouse was Margaret M Johnson

A copy of her birth cert will give her mothers name and maiden name

Using only the free 1911 index has the family in the Manchester District as follows:

Edward 1873
Mary Ellen 1874
John Edward 1893
Patrick 1900
Mary Ellen 1902
Joseph 1905
Dominic 1907
Catherine 1910

You will have to buy credits to view any further details such as birthplaces and number of years married etc as the 1911 is strictly pay per view

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk shows it as Manchester Register Office or Registrar Attended so it is possible it was in a Catholic Church

When Edward signed up for the Militia in 1890,i can tell you that he was aged 17,,he was 5ft 3"  weighed 113 lb,,,had a fresh and freckled complexion,,hazel eyes and brown hair,,he was a Roman catholic. He also had the initials M.E.K. tattooed on his left forearm,,,wonder what that stood for?  ;)

Many thanks gortonboy and carolew! Your help has been invaluable. It looks as though the Irish connection to Kilkenny must be a generation further back than I thought as it appears most were born in Manchester but this info should put me on the right track.
