Hi Deadants, is that any good, I downloaded Irfanview and tried to resize it, by half.
I also scanned it at 600 dpi but I think that might be too big to post here?
shall I resize again?
thank you for your help,
Newbie

There just seems to be something weird going on. unless it's in the photo. It has got large areas of one scale of gray. I have attached your latest photo you just sent. It is at 100% you can see how pixelated it is.  I have also attached what my scanner settings would be if I was going to scan it. Have another go. It shouldn't be in the photo as pixelation is a digital information problem.

I have to go now but will get onto it tomorrow

I don't know what I'm doing wrong ???
The photo is sepia /brown coloured. but very thin (I think it may be a copy) stuck on a piece of thick paper/cardboard which is also very old (I'm sure I can see a pair of boots or shoes next to her skirt just back from the edge.
My scanner is just a visioneer 4400 usb, first page  has this on it
Scan Configuration
Mode :    Grayscale  (drop down box, can select  Black & white, True Colour etc)
Res :  300 dpi  (drop down box, varies from 100 dpi to 1200 dpi)
Size :  5.43 x 7.27 (variable, Letter, A 4, user defined, autocrop)
Image size 3.39mb - this is the size for this actual image.

Does that make sense, I tried to copy to post here as you did but couldn't get it to do it.

Thats it

Hi Newbie,

my guess is that the 3.39MB is the size of a bitmap file (picture.bmp), which has the most information, and is correspondingly large.
When you've scanned the photo, try converting it to .jpg format  and look at the size then.

The image has to under 300 KB
(See  on "Additional Options")
Allowed file types: txt, jpg, jpeg, gif, pdf, mpg, png, ged.
Maximum attachment size allowed: 300 KB

If it is still too big, try resizing the .bmp file and converting again to .jpg.

And if that doesn't work, tell us exactly where it is not working, someone here will guide you along.

Good luck,
Bob

Hi  newbie,
until we can figure out why these photos colour count is so small, we won't be able to  get a satisfactory result.

1.
Optical resolution (the resolution or dots per inch at which the machine can scan): 1200 x 1200 dpi should be the minimum; 2400 x 2400 dpi is better. The more dots or pixels you have, the more you can enlarge the picture without it getting fuzzy or blocky.
2.
Bit depth: The higher the bit depth, the more colors the scanner can recognize. Look for 40-bit or higher.

Have a look at this ink http://tinyurl.com/7m26b

Thankyou, it's looking so much better, I see what you mean about blocky.  There is not much difference in tone in the photograph, especially the background.
Off to have another go.
