Lost Higginbotham
« on: Tuesday 09 August 11 19:35 BST (UK) »
Hi
Help please, has anyone come across a Joseph Higginbotham born in Cheshire and probably Marple about 1756 and moved over the hill to Great Longstone Derbyshire and married an Ann Hill in about 1785. I know its a long shot but I have little else to left try. Thanks.

Out of curiosity, I tried searching familysearch for offspring of Joseph and Ann using a variant spelling heginbotham which featured on the peripheries of my family research. My formula, once I'd got past the initial very basic search page, was:
First names    left blank
Surname    heginbotham
Event   Birth
Place   Derbyshire
Year    say 1793 +/- 10 (thus allowing bit of leeway on the possible date of marriage. It could also be worth trying say 1803 +/- 20)
Relationship    Parents
Father, first names     Joseph
Father, surname    left blank
Mother, first names   Ann
Mother, surname    left blank
The first few entries in the results seemed to me to be way off target, but you might find something in those listed further down under the 'less strong matches', eg a Matthew Heginbotham bp Great Longstone 14 Sep 1794, father Joseph. And, on further inspection, other entries in this list - eg for a Bettey Higgenbothom - look highly intriguing...
Good luck
Birtle

Thanks Birtle
Joseph was living and got married in Great Longstone in 1785 and went on to have 7 children on of which was Matthew b 1794. what I have a problem with is where he was born and baptised, which does not appear to be Great Longstone. as regards the spelling of the name it is a mass of variables they now use Heginbotham.
Most of the info I have is from the grave stone.
Thanks again

Looking at the IGI Batch site, only Baptisms for "Marple, Weslyan Methodists 1804 - 1840" are available on line.

Checked "Cheshire Parish Records on line"    http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/   but Marple not covered

Checked Chester Archives Catalogue for registers held. Marple from about the middle of the 17th C. have you considered contacting the Archives?

Glad you mentioned 7 children for Joseph (William, Peter, Mary, Mathew, Joseph, Sarah and Henry?)

regards

You might find your Joseph and family in one of the issues of The Hegginbotham Family Bulletin, edited by Frank Higenbotham.

Stockport Library has issues 1 (June 1970) to 49 (June 1982), ref S/E 73 Q

This peroiodical is a mine of information on the Higgenbothams however spelt

I have posted a conjectural family tree covering Joseph and his family at
http://heginbothamfamilyhistory.yolasite.com (also atrtached)

alternative linkages welcomed!

You mention the family as coming from Marple and I would thus like my version (above) to be proved wrong as I am descended from the Marple branch

The full details of the gravestone inscription would be welcome

Hi Oldposthouse. Welcome to RootsChat
I have looked at the tree that you attached and it fits with what I have from Joseph H b abt 1755/6 that married Ann Hill. I have not had time to look at it properly but a lot of it matches what I already have.

Our line goes Joseph b abt 1755 m Ann Hill their son Henry b 1804 Gt Longstone m Hannah Hancock, their son Joseph b 1834 Stoney Middleton m Caroline Gillatt, Their son Henry b 01 Apr 1870 m Ruth Sharman, This is where your tree leaves our line.

Henry and Ruth had two Children
Philip Beaumont b abt Sept 1897 in Hayfield Derbyshire d 28 Feb 1974
Ruth b 20 Jan 1900 at Stoney Middleton d 16 Jul 1995 at Calver Derbyshire aged 95

Philip Beaumont married Hannah Robinson abt Dec 1923 at Bakewell Derbyshire.

I have attached a transcription of the grave marker.

N.B. the 6th line should read Little Longstone
