Descendent of Chase Edmunds (1747-1835)
« on: Wednesday 10 August 11 21:03 BST (UK) »
Hi .... I'm new to RootsChat.

I live in Canada, but my grandparents emigrated from England around the time of the first world war. My son and I have been building our family tree. We managed to chase it back to John Edmunds (1801-1883) in Sussex, but then we lose steam.  We have potential ancestors, but no hard proof.

I think that John Edmunds (1801-1883) is the son of John Edmunds (1777-??) is the son of Chase Edmunds (1747-1835) and Ann Hawkins. Is there anyone who knows anything about Chase Edmunds and Ann Hawkins who can help me sort this out?

Hi,

Not sure what you already have but Chace Edmunds and Anne Hawkings mar. 22 Feb. 1773 Fittleworth, Sussex.

Their children bp. Pulborough, Sussex:

Benedicta bp. 9 May 1779       Edward bp. 10 Dec. 1786     Fanny bp. 8 Aug. 1784
John bp. 28 Feb. 1777       Dinah bp. 9 Sept. 1792      Mary 20 Jan. 1782
James bp. 4 Jun. 1775

Chace Edmunds was the son of James Edmonds and Ann, there is this marriage but can't be sure if correct.
James Edmunds mar. Ann 'Chaise' 22 Jan 1739 Angmering, Sussex.

There is this bp. of an Ann Hawkins 26 Apr. 1747 Fittleworth, Sussex. Parents James Hawkins and Sarah, and this marriage of James Hawkins and Sarah Spicer 3 Oct. 1737 Coldwaltham.

These areas Coldwaltham, Pulborough etc. are pretty close to each other.

These are extracted records from IGI.

Thanks for the information!

I have two more children for Chace and Ann.
+ Anne born 1773
+ Charlotte born 1790
I have no idea if this is accurate.

For the wife of James Hawkings, I have Sarah Spicer with a wedding date of October 3 1737

For Chace's son John (hopefully my ancestor) I have Sarah Brockhurst as his wife, but no details.

Do you have any info about the children of John (1777-???) ?

I think I'm there!

John (1800) had a son William in 1850. I can see him in the 1851 and 1861 census
William married Ellen Moase in 1887
They had a son William in 1891 .... and that's my grandfather

Thanks for the information

Hi
It will be worth your looking at the tips on the Beginners' board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,480454.0.html

The IGI is on the LDS site www.familysearch.org and we all use it as a first port of call for baptisms and marriages prior to civil registration.  It does not cover all parishes and you have to be very wary of member submitted entries but if it says "extracted" then it is a fair bet it will be accurate.  Always best to look at the original parish register though, as with any transcription.
If you join the Sussex Family History Group then you can access a lot of their transcriptions for the annual sub - about £12 I think.  Very useful if you have several Sussex families.
