London,Jersey,India connection
« on: Friday 12 August 11 08:54 BST (UK) »
Surnames Owen, Brewer, Biddle, Berkeley and Richardson all feature in our India based family however there are repeated mention of a Jersey connection with all of them and we can't find out how. As they seem to be also connected with The War Office and the miltary and/or Govt. Departments eg. Railways or Telegraph, I'm wondering if there was a big military base in Jersey c. 1800-1880 and/or schools which were popular with families based in the East Indies.  They seemed to have been fairly well off or even connected to titles.  Has anyone got any ideas?
The main brothers I am interested in are: William George Owen b.1817 & Rose Biddle; Arthur Walshman Owen b.1820 and wives Arabella Berkeley & Caroline Richardson; Herbert Parker Owen b.1834 and wives Emma Anne Biddle & Helen Cecelia Biddle; and Percy Fitzwilliam Owen b.1826 who is a mystery.  All brothers born Lambeth, Surrey to William Owen & Elizabeth Ann Brewer.

Because of the fear of an invasion from France there was a big military presence in Jersey between those dates with several garrisons on the island, mainly the ones at Elizabeth Castle and Fort Regent.

Have a look at www.jerseyheritage.jeron.je to see if any of your people are listed. I know there are still Biddles on the island.

JerseyLily - link to suggested site could not be found.  Am not very computer literate so unable to play around.
The parents of the Biddle girls were Joseph Biddle and Jane Adams Colchester.  I know there were other sisters and I think one brother all surviving to adulthood.
Joseph d. 1852  - was late of "Caledonia" a property on St Heliors.  He was formerly of th "London War Horse Guards"
I appear to glean bits about the wives' families but not about my Owen brothers....isn't it always the way?
Very much appreciate your help tho.

Oops - I got it wrong, should be www.jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je      Sorry

The page you need is Archives, that will take you to a page with a search box. Search by typing in the surname first followed by a comma and a space then the Christian name.
