Memorial Window Barnstaple Church
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 08:41 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the whereabouts of a memorial window in a Barnstaple Church.  The memorial is for Frederick Richard Lee and was put there by his daughter Sarah Catherine Hibbert in about 1880.
The problem is there are several churches in Barnstaple.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you!  Vliesbank  :)

Could it be St Peter & Mary's Church at Barnstaple.

Have a look at their web site, as it appears to have a connection to a family with same surname.

There is also information on one member in particular.

Might be worth contacting the church via e-mail reference the window of dedication etc.

Hi Vliesbank

I looked into St Peter & St Mary Magdalene church today. The window in question is in the Lady Chapel. The brass memorial plate reads:

To the Glory of God
and in loving remembrance of
Frederick Richard Lee, Royal Academician
Born at Barnstaple, June 10th 1798
Died in Cape Colony, June 5th 1879
this window is erected by his daughter

It is all in capitals with the letters I have capitalized in red.

I have taken some photos and will contact you by PM if you would like copies. There is also a good photo of the window itself on the church website, under the section, "The Church's History" & the paragraph "Present Times".

I don't know if you know Frederick Lee's ancestry, but there is also a memorial in the north aisle to a Thomas & Mary Lee, who may be his parents?

Regards

THANK YOU Steve for going to the trouble of recording the Memorial plate!  :)

Wonderful to know where it is and what it says!  Amazing to find it all out so quickly!

Thank you again from Australia!    :) :)

Thomas and Mary are Frederick's parents but I did not know there is a memorial to them as well  :D

As a matter of interest - had anyone heard of Frederick Richard Lee R.A. before my post?   Vliesbank

All

I have jpgs of the window and the plaque, also the window overlooks St Annes Chapel which has a stone dedicated to his brother Thomas who was drowned in 1834 -  jpg also available.

I have been researching the Lee family for a number of years but need to know your specific interests.

Vliesbank

Are you perhaps related to FRLee and possibly live in Queensland?
