Shea / Cody Carrick On Suir Tipp - MORE INFO
« on: Monday 15 August 11 17:46 BST (UK) »
Have obtained the marriage certificate of my g grandfather James O'Shea (Shea on his birth certificate) and g grandmother Annie O'Shea nee O'Shea (who also appears as Shea on 1901 census).  They were married in St Nicoholas Church Carrick On Suir Tipperary on the 14th Feb 1915.

From this I managed to get Annie's birth certificate and now have her mothers maiden name; Mary 'Cody'.

Am a bit at a loss how to go back any further.  I have Annies parents estimated ages from the 1901 and 1911 census' and know that her father was Michael Shea and her mother Mary Shea nee Cody.  I am presuming that Annie's parents marriage cert would be a good start, but having difficulty finding it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you the copy of the 1911 census for Michael and Mary Cody Shea? if you have  it should show how long they were married and give an approximate marriage date that may help to find the marriage. You can either try rootsireland - a pay site or search the civil registration Index at family search.org I can't check the census as the site is down at the moment.

without the 1911 census details it's a long shot... but a possible marriage cross-match for the two names mentioned :

  Name: Mary Coady
  Registration district:   Carrick-On-Suir
  Event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Jan-Mar 1884
  Volume: 4 / Page : 459

  name: Michael Shea
  [same references as Mary]

Looks like thats the one, just viewed the marriage details, names match and address conincides with that found on the census.. great.

So now I have the name of Michaels father; Patrick Shea and Marys father; Nicholas 'Coady' (another new surname spelling!).  Their mothers details appear to be incorrect - looks like the name of the church and priest as opposed to mothers names.

Would you suggest I now go back to the census to get more info on these new ancestors?

Having another difficulty finding info with this line.

I have my g granfathers birth cert:
James Shea, born Jul 1891, Carrick On Suir Workhouse, mother Ellen Shea, no father listed.

Marriage cert:
Married Anne (Annie) Shea (20 years), St Nicholas Church Carrick on Suir, address Ballyrichard Rd, date 14th Feb 1915, fathers nameonly recorded as O'Shea.

Death Cert:
Died 1981, St Pancras London.

Also on his military papers it lists his mother as living in 'Garryrue' (or least thats what it looks like!) Carrick on Suir.

Anyone have any suggestions how I find any more info re James' mother Ellen Shea?

There's a couple of townlands in Co. Tipperary named Garryroe that might fit - none called Garryrue that I see on the townland database : www.thecore.com/seanruad

Is the marriage record you mentioned a civil cert or some sort of parish record ?

Unfortunately the lack of father's and husband's names on those records is going to make it very difficult to track down other details - since they are clues usually used to confirm, or rule out, any connections.

None of the Garrryroe townlands appear to be near Carrick on Suir they all seem to be nearer and west of Clonmel.
If you are not sure of the original name can you scan part of the document and attach and perhaps somebody might be able to help deciphering it.

could you remove the full image - full certs etc are not supposed to be posted on RootsChat

I've attached an extract of the document showing just the placenames.
