Hi Newbie
This is a list of all Alberts and Alfreds in the 1891 census, there are no Elfreds,I would suggest that the name is a transcription error. The handwriting you examined on the 1901 census is not an original document written by the family but a copy transcribed into the census book by the local enumerator, there are many many errors.
None of the list below have the right parents, except for Alfred aged two born Chelsea.

Ellender, Albert 2 Lyminge, Kent Son  Lyminge  Kent
Ellender, Albert G 5 Hougham dover, Kent Son  St Mary  Kent
Ellender, Alfred 7 Maidstone, Kent Son  Maidstone  Kent
Ellender, Alfred 1 Canterbury, Kent Son  St Mildred  Kent
Ellender, Alfred 2 Chelsea, London Son  Chelsea  London

Are the two certificates you have originals past down through the family or ones that you have sent for ??
If they are original I would say that the name changes (Albert and Alfred ) must be correct.
If not original they could be two different people. ?

Thinking about the ages as described on the certificates it is not unusual for a person ere on the low side when marrying, but there is no advantage in fibbing on the death cert.
At the library this morning I did a check of the GRO births for 1888-1893 and found the following Ellenders

Afred Joseph b Chelsea march 1889  1a 329
Albert            b Elam      march  1889     2a 1031
Alfred William b Canterbury Dec. 1889 2a 816
Albert                                  Jun 1893 2a 949
Albert Edward b Portsea     Jun 1893 2b 514

I then checked the 1901 index and found these Alberts and Alfreds

Name Age Where Born Administrative County Civil Parish

Alfred Ellender  11 Kent Canterbury Canterbury Canterbury Formly S Mildred
Elfred Ellender  10 Chelsea London Chelsea
Albert Ellender  7 Hants Portsmouth Hampshire Portsmouth
Albert Ellender  8 Kent Preston Kent Preston Next Wingham
Albert Ellender  12 Kent Lyminge Kent Elham

I would suggest you check the census pages in order to find the parentage of the above.

I am sorry if this message seems a bit of a jumble but a lot of it is me thinking aloud.
The important think is to make sure you have the correct certificates for BMD working backwards from your husband.

regards

peterbennett
