Saunders - Waterford (Please help a beginner)
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 22:15 BST (UK) »
Hello All

I have found that nearly all of my mothers side of my family originated from Ireland, and in most cases all i have to work on is a census showing place of birth - Ireland.  So, I really need to learn where to start looking for my ancestors when I do not know where in Ireland they were from.  Can anyone help?  Unfortunately they seem to be common names, O'Brien (Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny), Metcalfe, McVain (McVeyen), Kervin (Kervarn, Keirvon) etc.

There is one person who I do have some information on: Sarah Saunders (my GGGrandma), married Thomas Grant 17.4.1891 Birmingham. she aged 26, he 25.  Her farther is George Saunders (deceased), a school master.  The 1891 census Birmingham shows Sarah Saunders, was staying Thomas Grants parents, she was from Waterford, Ireland. (As of yet I have not found her husband to be, Thomas Grant on the 1891 census, he was a police officer in England but was sent to Ireland where he met Sarah)

I have a photo of Sarah and Thomas, it was written on 'Mam & Da on their Wedding Day, Dublin, and the year... which I know to be wrong!

The ICI shows Sarah Saunders, with farther George, born 1864 Portlaw, Waterford - but this is a couple of years out.  Can anyone help?!?

Thank you..

Claire

Hi Audrey and Goggy

Thank you both for your replies.

I saw those people Audrey but I don't know where to go from here to look for a connection.  It would be fantastic to find out which school George taught at so I can find out if there are any old school records.

I have tried to search on Google for Saunders, I get loads of hits about Waterford Crystal and about Art supplies!!

Audrey,Angelfish,I'm not as disciplined in my searches as you Audrey!!Angelfish, look,s as though you could be related thru' the Thompson's,Guilcagh,my Binsteed's(Stead's)were from there,Waterford.
Saunder's seem to have been a big name around there,(I only go for the connection's).Some of my other side, executed after the 1798 'rising are down as members of the "Saundersgrove Militia".
I agree on the dearth of info, but soon learn to search the 'backroad's'!!
              Regard's to you both.
