John Evans Princes Block Presteigne
« on: Saturday 20 August 11 22:52 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Wondering if anyone knows where Princes Block, Presteigne is?  I have a death cert for an ancestor, George Evans, died 1853 in Stapletons Hill, Presteigne.  Present at the death was a John Evans, with the address of Princes Block Presteigne.  I have been unable to locate this address, and havent been able to pinpoint a john in the 1851 census, and am still none the wiser who this John Evans is as well.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

cheers
Mark

The place/house/farm/street/etc,  name,  'Princes Block' does not appear in any
of my references in and around Presteigne.
Stapleton is of course just 500m NNW of Presteigne.

I wonder if you have the year of George's death correct, I can only find a George Evans
burial at Presteigne (St. Andrew) 30th April 1851, aged 55, and no George appears in the
Free BMD for 1853 in Presteigne.

Unfortunately the NBI for Presteigne is only between 1813-1851.

Hi Mike,
thanks for your reply.  Sorry yes typo on the death year, George died 27 Apr 1851.

I have tried looking at old maps online to find this place, to no avail. Its a mystery!
I have attached that particular portion of the cert, so that theres no transcription error on my part.

cheers

Partner grew up around Presteigne. He doesn't know of anywhere called Princes block. However I think its says Princes plock - which could mean princes field. But i still don't know where that could be sorry.

Hi Vic1,
cheers for your suggestion, I didnt know there was such a word as 'plock' so assumed it was 'block',
that could be a step forward! Might be worth looking into land tax records then?

cheers
