Hope the OP gets back to you ;D

If you cross reference death registrations of Mary Hicks of approximately her sort of age after 1881, (and perhaps) especially before 1891, with those who were around in the 1881 census you could see what the chances are. The registration districts are the same of course. Most of the match ups could be provisionally eliminated (nothing is certain of course!)

One to consider perhaps?
March 1885 Gravesend 2a 338
Hicks, Mary
age 75

Not a vast distance from Bexley. That one was buried in March 1885, at Gravesend Cemetery.

You can see the grave on Billion Graves. The inscription isn't particularly clear, but has been transcribed for us "Of your charity pray for the repose of the soul of MARY HICKS who died March 4th 1885 aged 75. Rest in peace"

Does that sound a bit catholic? :-\
Is she alone in that grave?

I see in 1881 that they have a son Arthur b Gravesend, aged 30

So they were familiar with the place!

Can't  believe I did that! Old age and dotage is obviously catching up with me faster than I thought!
Very sorry for my stupid mistake. And I was so e
excited to have found someone who was researching the same person as me! Der-brain or what???

Hi
Don't worry about it!
I think Mary most probably died before 1891.
Edwin and his family including father Thomas must have moved to Windsor Road, Forest Gate, not long after the 1891 census.

Then those two deaths
Dec 1892 West Ham 4a 81
Hicks, Thomas
age 82

March 1893 West Ham 4a 85
Hicks, Jane Grice
age 44

Then later in 1893, the Westminster catholic census
1 Windsor Road, Forest Gate
Edwin Hicks, Salesman, Widower
Mary Hicks (over 21)
Thomas, 19, Vincent, 17, Nellie, 15, Lillie, 13, Teddie, 11, Leo, 7

Presuming that Mary is Edwin's daughter? She was age 19 in 1891, when they were in Aldershot.

Hello again,
Yes, Jane Grice Early was my great grandmother. And the Thomas who died the year before her was indeed 'my' Thomas. Edwin and Jane had 8 children, 2 of whom died in infancy, one became a nun andn another a priest. All the girls remained unmarried, and so my Grandfather was the only one to carry the name to the next generation!
My family research started with wanting to find out more about this side of the family, but they have remained elusive, while on my mother's side I have managed to trace back to my 11th great grandfather, which was a great surprise. One of these days, I will find out more about the Hicks's!

Thank you again for your help.
