HALLETT family in Peckham
« on: Tuesday 23 August 11 08:51 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Hallett family who were living in Peckham around 1900.
I have a marriage certificate for William Hallett b.1894 who married Nellie Green in 1916. His father is shown as George Hallett deceased, occupation Carman.
I found the family on the 1911 census and William's mother was shown as married and deserted. Whether they found out that George was dead or not I do not know, but his mother Maria married the lodger William Weeks in 1914 and William Weeks is a witness at her son William's marriage in 1916.
I have a copy of the parish record for Maria Bradley and George Hallett in 1889 which took place at St James Church Edmonton Middlesex. At that time George's occupation was shown as a butcher.
I found George and Maria and their eldest son George in Peckham on the 1891 census. However, George and Maria's place of birth is just shown as England.
I cannot find any of the family on the 1901 census. I have no idea if George had already deserted his family by then, but I have looked for Maria b.1861 in Surrey and each of her 3 sons George b.1889, Wandsworth, Henry b.1892 and William b.1894 both born Camberwell and I cannot find any of them.
From George and Maria's marriage record I know that George's father was also called George and he is shown as deceased at the time of the wedding.
How can I go further back?
Hope someone can help me with this one

This sort of information is notoriously unreliable, so keep an open mind about when he died   :)

Isobel,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  I am sure that is the correct census record.

So they were telling porkies on the 1901 then. I never thought to look for Mr Weeks!

I really appreciate your help and I will check the death record you gave me also.

You are an absolute star.

Hi again,

I checked the death record you gave me, but I don't believe that is the correct one.

On the 1911 census Maria has listed herself as married and deserted whereas when she marries Mr Weeks she says she is a widow. Of course, having told fibs once it is quite possible that she lied again when she remarried. However, I think if George was dead she would have described herself as a widow. What do you think?
