In 1851 a lodger with John Jenkin James took on Johns name and became James Jenkin Gale he was aged 8 in the 1851 census. AJames Gale b. 1826 Tavistock Devon is found in the 1841 census, living in Wharf aged 15, next door to a Susan Deacon Did these two give birth to James , and "Give" him to John Jenkin?prior to their marriage in 1844, Have been unable to trace James Gale birth, but have his death cert named James Jenkin Gale, also have his hand written signed letters and poetry--- my great grandad. Many thanks, Val

Several births of people called John Jenkin in Truro Reg District at the right time - maybe one of those is him?

Is this the James Jenkins Gale who married Elizabeth Arrowsmith ?  See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,547382.0.html

If so, the marriage register records that his father was James Gale, a plasterer

As you have said there dont appear to be birth detials for James Gale
Hence the need to think a little broader, I dont see how you can rule out the James Jenkin births - maybe Gale was added later - a step fathers name for example?

Who does he name as his father when he marries? - sorry Shaun, just saw it in reply #2 !

The middle name appears to be Jenkins not Jenkin,  according to the marriage register, the death announcement (in the Liverpool Mercury), the probate index, the baptisms of children Thomas and Annie, GRO indices for marriage and death.

The other child lodging with John Jenkin and his wife in St Clement, Truro in 1851 appears to be Rosina Knuckey aged 13 of "Perran".  If that's short for Perranarworthal then she appears in the 1861 census back in her home town with parents Thomas and Elizabeth Knuckey, and the IGI has a probable baptism for her (transcribed as Knuchy) in 1838.  Just noting this. No obvious connection with James Gale.

thankyou so much for replies, I am still a beginner! What does i.g.i. stand for? Am unable to trace James Gale senior, a plasterer? James junior signs himself James Jenkins Gale on his marriage cert. James senior may still be living in Truro?Lizdb--- Gale was  not added later it is on the 1851 census--- James Gale , A lodger with John Jenkin.   Trish--- 1871 census shows James Jenkin Gale married to Elizabeth , plus Ellen her niece. James and Elizabeth were married in 1869 in everton Lancs.
My instinct still leads me to believe that the James Gale aged 16born 1826 living in WharfeDawlish Tavistock 1841 with other Gales, was Father to James Gale junior. He went on to marry Susan Deacon I just cant find any more Gales fitting these dates. If only I could find a birth cert for James Gale junior His hand written letters and poems make reference to him being an orphan, but I am at a loss down this track as well??? many thanks   Val (Malvena)
