Early Parish Baptism Records
« on: Monday 29 August 11 00:06 BST (UK) »
Hi
Would anyone know if Church of England Parish Records of Baptisms exist/can be accessed online for Victoria in the early 1850s please?
Am wondering if there is any baptismal record for my ancestor, Henry Gadsby, whose birth was registered at Creswick, Victoria in 1857.
More interested in any baptismal record (cannot locate any birth record) for his 2 older siblings - Emma Jane and William Gadsby.

Parents of all the above were William Gadsby and Sophia Gadsby.

Thanks

Australian Vital Records lists 6 children born to William and Sophia, nee Giddens,in Victoria but not Emma or William.Nothing in NSW BMD either.Might these children have been born overseas?Do you have William snr's death certificate?

There were actually 8 children in the family and William senior's death certificate referred to '2 girls and 6 boys' so the first two children were included in the count.

Sophia's death certificate in 1903 listed all 7 surviving offspring with their names and ages.

Hi Summit,

I would approach the Ballaarat FHS about accessing church registers.  There is nothing like local knowledge, and I doubt that you will find anything online.  There was no church in Creswick until much later, but I notice from reading the newspapers that the Reverend Mr POTTER was the C of E Minister in Ballaarat in the 1850's and he married a number of people who were "of Creswick".  If he travelled to Creswick to perform baptisms then his registers should be with the church in Ballaarat.

Did William and Sophia actually get married?

William and Sophia supposedly got married - but there is no certificate. References to 'Glenlogie, Lexton' as a marriage place appear on birth certificates of registered children.
Thanks for the suggestion re contacting the Ballarat Family History Society.

If you do need to get someone to check church registers for you, perhaps they can look for the marriage at the same time.
