Abbeyleix workhouse
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 04:40 BST (UK) »
Hi. Can anyone tell me if records from the 1840s exist for Abbeyleix Workhouse? I have an Irish Orphan Girl who was given passage to NSW and I am hoping to find out when she went into the workhouse and if anyone else in the family were living there.
Katharine.

Thanks for that Jack. I had a look at their website, and they don't seem to have anything pertaining to the workhouse or its records indicated. Nevertheless I have contacted them to ask if they know where I might find relevant information.
Thanks for the link.

If anyone else has found records for Abbeyleix workhouse I would be keen to know where they are kept!

Hi Katherine,

Have you had any luck in discovering and records for the Abbeyleix workhouse yet?

A friend of mine has just discovered that her grandfather was born in the workhouse at Abbeyleix in 1891 and would also like to know if there are any records available to search through.

Chris

Hi Katharine75

(I know this is an old post, but hoping you might see my reply)

Did you ever manage to find any records from the Abbeylaix Workhouse and Famine Orphan girls?

I have an ancestor who was one of the Earl Grey Scheme Orphan Girls who came from Abbeyleix. I have not managed to uncover very much about her yet, except her place of origin and names of parents from her arrival records in New South Wales colony.

The link Pastmagic posted above says you need to contact Laois County Library about workhouse records but
as you have her parent's names have you looked for her in the parish registers.
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0685
she may of course be from one of the surrounding parishes.

I have previously contacted the library a number of years ago. I was told at that stage that the workhouse records were kept offsite and if I, or someone on my behalf, wanted to look at them I would need to contact them a few days prior so they could have them ready.
I am in Australia - so didn't do that.

However, I have contacted the library again to see if the situation has changed at all. I would be most interested to hear from anyone who might be able to do a lookup at the library for me (and the other poster, smbutler) pending the reply from the library!

I am curious to see when my ancestor went into the workhouse and what family members also joined her, etc.
