Hi there,

If I'm reading your messages right I think this is what happened :

your great grandmother was actually born Bridget Sherlock - father Henry Sherlock

on 27th October 1878 she married John Henry Colwell - thereby becoming Bridget Colwell

John Henry Colwell obviously passed away and

on 29th June 1887 she married Frederick Bushill under her marriage name of Bridget Colwell

It's most likely that whoever wrote up the paperwork may have just asked her father's name ie Henry and it was put against her first marriage surname as opposed to her maiden name, thereby making Henry Colwell !

Under this presumption I have found a few bits:

Bridget Sherlock had a sister called Mary Anne Sherlock (same father Henry - same address') and this Mary Anne married a Geoffrey MacGrath in 1878 - Bridget was witness too !

There was a Christopher Sherlock born to a Henry Sherlock and Elizabeth Dardis (no way to know tho if this was the same Henry)

There is also a William Sherlock getting married in 1867 parents Henry Sherlock & Elizabeth (again no way to know if this is the same Henry)

There is also a Thomas Sherlock getting married in 1874 to Maria Kennedy parents Henrici Sherlock & Elizabeth (again no way to know if this is the same Henry)

I hope this is of some use - please bear in mind this is just my theory and should be double checked !

Tara

According to the 1911 census, Bridget and Frederick had 1 child that had died, but I'm yet to find. It is possible she/he was born and died in Ireland.

The children I have for them are Elizabeth Mary, Henry, Kathleen Jemima, Harriet, Emmeline, and Frederick Thomas.

Hi there,

I can't answer that q for you but having another look at records I did see this interesting one -

This is the baptism of your Frederick - it says that he was born in 1864 but got baptised in 1887 ???

Maybe for a change of religion ?

frederick william bushell baptism

I agree that he was baptised then for a change of religion.

On a search to find the death of John Henry Colwell to help prove our theory :)

Going back I theorised that Bridget's parent's were Henry Sherlock and Elizabeth Dardis - I checked Glasnevin Cemetery and this Henry died in 1866 and is buried there - his last address 122 Townsend Street which matches the records that I sent you.

Tara - Somehow I've only just seen this, thank you! May I ask, how did you access Glasnevin Cemetery records?

You can play around with the search index and see if you get hits. To see the actual record though you need to go in and buy it.

Hi There

In earlier messages I mentioned that Bridget Sherlock had a possible brother called Thomas Sherlock (based on this Thomas' marriage on IrishGeneaglogy)

Anyway, I found a prison record from 1868 for this Thomas Sherlock.

In 1868 he was living at 122 Townsend Street so he defo ties in with Bridget.

NOW this is where it gets fab interesting.

Thomas' record states that the was born in Mullingar !!!!

So, this explains why there are no baptisms on irishgenealogy for this family.

The family obviously originated in Westmeath, later moved to Dublin !
