Shipwright

Would anyone know whether a Shipwright is same as a Ship Joiner.  I have the occupation Shipwright on marriage Cert, I think I may have found the person in 1861, but occupation is Ship Joiner.

A Shipwright is a builder & repairer of ships,  so I would say a Ship Joiner is a carpenter of the same.

It could be the right person as he was a Ship Joiner in 1861 the marriage of his son was some time later.

Me again,

This has given me something else to delve in, didn't realise that apprenticeships and maybe papers could be involved.  I have two shipwrights though neither seemed to have any money, but I have never looked into that.

My great grandfather is variously listed as SHIPWRIGHT - SHIPS CARPENTER - SHIP'S JOINER - MASTER JOINER and JOINER.

It merely depended on who was asking the question, e.g. registrar, and who was answering it e.g. eloping daughter
