Henry and Clara Azulay - Photographers
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 12:59 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the family and marriage of
Henry Azulay (born 1845 in London, Middlesex)

He is shown in 1871 as a Photographer, resident at 132 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge.
Married to Clara (born 1841 in Whitechapel, London) with children
Sarah M. (Sarah Matilda?) (born abt 1868 in St Pancras, Middlesex)
Morris A. (Albert ?) (born abt 1870 in Tottenham?, Middlesex)

In 1881, a Clara Azulay (born abt 1841 in St Marys, Middlesex) is resident at 45 Holborn (N S),
St Andrew Holborn Above The Bars And St George The Martyr. She is a Photographer
(I think she was a Press Photographer?)
Children shown are Sarah, Albert plus
Isabella Lilian (born abt 1871 in Knightsbridge)
Pauline (born 1877 in Tottenham Court Road)

In 1891 Clara Azulay is an Eating House Keeper at the Star Eating House, Pier Street, Walton Le Soken.
1901 a widow in Walthamstow. Ten years later she is in Forest Gate.

Albert Azulay (son) was a photographer, at High Street and Newgate Street, Walton around 1890s.

I can find no records for Azulay and only find a Clara Isaac marrying a Isaac Azulay in 1866.

Any assistance finding Henry and Clara Azulay welsome
Thanks

I think that the Isaac Azulay who married Clara Isaac's would be your man as there was an Isaac Henry Azulay who is noted as a photographer at the same time and in the same area as Henry Azulay.

A birth certificate for one of the children of Isaac/Henry and Clara would confirm her maiden name, but:

The Henry who is in 1891 at St. Pancras is in 1881 under the name "Ashley", with Sarah and Tressy.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/
 - here there is indexed in 1888 a divorce case - Clara Azulay against Isaac Azulay, so I am guessing that at some point he ran off with Sarah, she found out and brought a divorce case against him, presumably on the grounds of adultery and desertion - just adultery wouldn't have been enough (divorce laws being rather weighted against women at the time), but if he had also left her and wasn't supporting her or the children that would be grounds for divorce.

There is a death in 1905 for Sarah Hart Azulay, presumably the same Sarah found in the censuses.  There is also in 1881 a Noah Hart, b. Whitechapel in 1869 who I can't find records for before or after, who might be the Noah found in 1891.

UPDATE
Isaac (Henry) Azulay
I think his parents may have been Maurice Azulay (b. 1814 in Germany) and Matilda (b. 1812 in Whitechapel). They are shown in Colchester Street, Saint Mary Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets where the father is an Umbrella Maker. They have a son Isaac   (b. 1846 in Sun St, Bishops Gate) which seems to match. I can find no record after this.
There is a mention of a Isaac Azulay (aged 74) born 1807 in Hamburg, Germany as Widowed / Inmate of Hospital at 253 Mile End Road. (Family History Library Film 1341105 / Public Records Office Reference RG11)

Isaac (Henry) Azulay's children with Sarah (Sarah Hart Azulay?) were:
Treasy Maurice Azulay (b. 1880 in Dawlish, Devonshire)
who became a photographer and married either Emma Marie Harrys or Emily Grace M M Sholl? in 1902.
Herbert Azulay (b. 1887 in Torquay, Devonshire) who became a Photographers Assistant and married Emilie Adeline Kite (b. 1891 in Battersea Surrey).

Issac seems to have married Rosie (b. 1881 Hackney) after Sarah's death in 1905? He is still a photographer, resident at Old Kent Road, Southwark. They have two children
Stella (b.1906 in Rochester, Kent) and Winifred Gertrude M (b. 1909 in St Pancras, London).
Any info on this would be helpful

Meanwhile his first wife shown as Clara (nee Issac?) son with him Albert Maurice Azulay (b. abt 1870 in St Pancras, Middlesex – d. 1958 in Honiton, Devon) who was a photographer in Walton Le Soken/Walton on the Naze area, marries Eva Roy (b. abt. 1874 in Walton-on-Naze, Essex - d. 20 Jul 1933 in Thorpe-Le-Soken, Essex). in Colchester, Essex around 1894.
For some reason their children have the last name 'Wallace'
Merle Azulay Wallace (b. abt 1896 in Walton On The Naze, Essex – ?)
Roy Azulay Wallace   (b. abt 1897 in Walton On The Naze, Essex – ?)
Paul Azulay Wallace   (b. abt 1902 in Sidmouth, Devon – ?)

According to Essex Record Office their is no record of him in area as a photographer c. 1890's?

There is a Probate Record for an Issac Azulay of 228 Old Kent Road who died on 3 March 1933 leaving £503 to Herbert Azulay, gas lighting engineer.

If anybody can add any info on Issac (Henry) Azulay or other members I would be grateful.

According to FreeBMD there are 6 children, born after 1902,registered as Azulay, all born Honiton district except the last born Axminster. These include probable twins and range up to 1917 (so I won't name them) and the last two are given as mother's maiden name Roy,presumably Albert as father.
