C Little and Sons Ltd - Funeral Parlour - Order Book 1901-1936

At the Auckland Central Library family history room, there is a drawer full of cards - of all the names in the order books for this period.  Worth a look if your relative was in Auckland at this time.

Once you have found you person in the drawer, armed with the Volume and page number, you go across the corridor to the special collection, and ask to see the records.

They will give you a blank order sheet and pencil, so you can copy the information from the precious pages. Gives name, occ, where died, DOD, age, where born, how long in NZ, where married, age when married, to whom married, widow's age, age of males, age of females, Name of Father, name of Mother.  Date of Funeral, Cause of Death.

The it itemises the bill - Religion, Cemetery, Plots, coffin, hearse, carriages, Removal, Advertising, Cetificate, Conducting, Bearers, Embalming, Funeral from, Name of person responsible for Expenses, Address, Occupation.

Then the total cost of the funeral.

I went through all the names, and identified all the Chinese of the time.

Here's an example of the info on the cards.

Chung Chew Auckland Hopsital age 76. c/- 188 Ponsonby Road. Acct Mr A H Chee, Lower Queen Street. Shipped ex SS “Victoria” DOD 26/7/17. D of F 16/8/17. Vol 24 page 90.

Here's the summary of costs for one of the decease, in 1936.

Cemetery Plot 2 pounds
Sunday fee 10 shillings
Coffin 8 pounds 10 shillings
Hearse 2 pounds 10 shillings
Carriages 1 pound 10 shillings
Removal to our chapel 10 shillings
Embalming 3 pounds 15 shillings

Total 19 pounds 5 shillings.

As an aside - I have now typed up all the Chinese in the Central Auckland area, just over 50 names and basic details. Once I get a chance, I will go and look at the actual order books and transcribe all the list.

Hi Helenw52

Thank you for the information on C Little and Sons Ltd funeral parlour.

At some stage I may ask some one to do some look ups for me as I have some family members who died around that time and I now live in the south island so am unable to do the lookups myself.

Regards Eileen Smith
