Where was Colonel Benson buried?
« on: Saturday 03 September 11 07:41 BST (UK) »

Hello

I'm searching for the burial place for John Musgrave Benson.

He was a wealthy man (his probate is on ancestry) who died 1932 in Oswladkirk Hall, Oswaldkirk near Helmsely in North Yorkshire.

He was an important person and character within the village who self-styled himself as 'Colonel Benson, head of the village.  He certainly served in the Boer War 1901-2 and reached the rank of Hon Major.  Another of my posts is gathering info about his military career.

However, there is no record of his burial place.  I was hoping that Rootschat members might have some idea of how and where this knowledge could be found!  So far I have reached a dead end (no pun intended!)

Any pointers appreciated.  Thanks

As he was 'an important man and character within the village'  have you looked at local newspapers for details of his death/funeral

Brilliant - thank you so much

That makes sense because he was born in Potternewton nearby to Leeds and christened at Moorallerton - so might have returned to his family tomb.
We shall make the journey to Moorallerton to see if we can find the Benson Family tomb - and check the Malton Gazette for any further story.

Thanks again

Just to round this one off - my wife's parents visited St. John's Church, Moorallerton which rosie99's post pointed to and found the impressive Benson Family tomb with various family names recorded - John Musgrave was not one of them.

We are in the process of contacting the parish to locate any records of burials from 1932 to confirm the internment.  Also awaiting reply from the offices of the Malton Gazette.
