Where is John Fair?

Hi,


Searching for John Fair born in Woolwich, Kent (supposedly)! He gives his date of birth on the 1881 and 1891 census as 1853, and states Woolwich as his place of birth. By this time though he is married and living in Sunderland.

I cannot find him prior to this, nor can I find any evidence of his marriage, and he vanishes in 1901, although his wife, Mary Ann, does not state that she is a widow. Although she is widowed by 1911 and still living in Sunderland.

Can anybody find him other than in 1881 and 1891?

1871 this looks a bit of a coincidence

Was he a french polisher?

I keep looking and think perhaps the next best step would be to purchase the marriage certificate of James FAIR to Judith LAWLESS March quarter 1871 Sunderland registration district ref. 10a 626 which would, hopefully, give a name and occupation for John and James' father.  I wonder if there is any army connection give the differing places ie. Woolwich/Ireland/Canada ???
