IGI baptism illegitimacy query
« on: Thursday 05 May 05 14:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to check all online possibilities before I go to the LMA to check the PRs for my William Gage.  There seem to be two possibilities which are a likely 'fit' with his census entries.  One is straightforward (but I have a feeling is the wrong one), the other ...

William Gage bapt 17 Aug 1808 St Botolphs Bishopsgate
Father: William Barnard
Mother: Amelia Gage

Do I take it from this that William is illegitimate?

I can find no marriage for William Barnard and Amelia on the IGI.

p.s. this is a 'submitted' record so taking it with a pinch of salt  ::)

Regards
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

I think you will have to look at the original register to sort that one out. I have a similar instance, except the child is baptised "Ezekiel James Starling or Griffith", mother is Emma Griffith, father is Ezekiel Starling. If this not illigitimate then Ezekiel would be a bigamist when he married my ancestor!
