Hoping it will confirm the earlier findings - did you check on possible siblings?

Hi,

More info on the Joseph/Ellen marriage,

26 Sep 1909
Parish: All Souls, Harlesden

Joseph Christopher Herbert DOWNS
Age: 25
Bachelor
Shunter
1 Honeywell Rd Harlesdon NW
Father: Joseph DOWNS, Miner

Ellen GIBBS
Age: 23
Spinster
52 Station Road, Harlesdon NW
Father: William GIBBS, Foreman Porter

Interestingly it looks like two sisters married on the same day, the marriage above it on the image is,

26 Sep 1909
Parish: All Souls, Harlesden

William Benjamin BEAVER
Age: 25
Bachelor
Porter
1 Honeywell Rd Harlesdon NW
Father: John BEAVER, Stoker

Annie GIBBS
Age: 22
Spinster
52 Station Road, Harlesdon NW
Father: William GIBBS, Foreman Porter

It looks like it could be the right Joseph as I found this birth, (Filongley was in the Meriden RD)

Christopher Joseph H DOWNS    Mar Q 1884    Meriden    6d  465

Looks like they often used their second names in this family.

Regards,
Daisy

Hi there

my Joseph Ernest C downs married a lady Gladys Preston in 1934 in Nuneaton and then had my dad Gerald Ernest downs born Dec 1934 in Nuneaton.

So I dont think we have the right Joseph marring a Ellen Gibbs in 1909 unless he got married a second time I suppose.

Thanks Alison :)

It wont be right marriage as Joseph Downs was born in 1910 Brentford

The 1909 marriage is that of your Ernest's possible parents.

Did you not get the Birth Certificate shown on the first page of this thread?

Quote
An Ernest Downs c1910/11 is on the Brentford free index with a Joseph c1884 and Ellen c1886

The free index gives Ernest's POB as Acton, Middlesex.

Joseph (c1884) has a POB of 'Fillongly' (prob Fillongley), Warks (might be the connection to Nuneaton area later) -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fillongley

Ellen (c1886) is from Wing in Bedfordshire. (think that should be Buckinghamshire?)

This might be their marriage in the Hendon District* (and Christopher might be the C in Joseph E C Downs)

Marriages Sep Quarter of 1909
~~~~~~~~
DOWNS  Joseph Christopher H    Hendon  3a 504
GIBBS  Ellen     Hendon  3a 504
* Here's Ellen in 1891 Willesden (Hendon District) with her parents William (a Porter) & Jane Gibbs - she was born in Wing.
RG12 Piece 1048 Folio 59 Page 22.  Willesden, 23 Earlsmead Road.
Anyways, leave this simmering until you get the Certificate(s)
Hi there
Yes thanks it is all sorted my Joseph Ernest Downs was b1900 Nuneaton mum was Emma Williams and dad was John Downs B1865 Fillongley
I have gone back on John his dad was called Joseph Downs and mum called Charlotte Barris and I have once again come to a dead end as I cant go back any further on Joseph and I cant find Charlotte anywhere before her marriage.
Oh well still loads of hunting to do.
Thanks  :D
So the 1910 birth year and the other findings were all a red herring - and it was the 1900 chap you mentioned in the first post you made on this thread?
The only likely Index entry for a 1900 +/- 1 year birth in the Nuneaton area is spelled DOWNES.
BUT the only man with both middle initials is the 1910 Brentford one.
Hi
Charlotte and Joseph married in Sept 1853 in the Meriden region.
!851 census Charlotte is mis transcribed as Sharlott Barrass living in Dunchurch Warwickshire, she is at home with mum Hannah (who is with them in 1861)
Hope this helps
