1871 census - Hotel Des Etrangers, 4 Piccadilly Manchester
« on: Friday 09 September 11 15:09 BST (UK) »
Hello, has anyone heard of this hotel please? One of my family members was working there as a domestic servant at the time of the 1871 census, I can't find anything much on the internet, but I may be looking in the wrong places! Her name was Mary Ann Stanley, born 1843 in Pointon Fen Lincolnshire, she was using the name Ann at this time, after that I haven't found a marriage or death for her yet.
Many thanks.

Hi,

It's in the Manchester Directories for 1876 (run by John Battaglia) and 1879 (Robert Brook):

Piccadily right hand side -
Manchester Royal Infirmary
Portland St
Queens Hotel
Hotel des Etrangers
Waterloo Hotel
Chatham St

so it was between Portland St and Chatham St, which are still there today so you can see where it was on google streetview - site currently occupied by The Brunswick I think.

By the time the 1886 directory has come out, 4 Piccadilly is known as the Clarence Hotel.

Hope that helps a bit
 :) Barbara
