With the help of everyone here I was able to establish that my great-great grandfather, Henry Griffin, was a stoker on the Serpent when she went down in November 1890.  Thank you!!!

He left behind a pregnant wife, Mary (nee Kenner) and an almost 2 year old daughter, Winifred.  My great grandmother, Mabel, was born 5 months after his death.  I have the articles from the Times regarding the sinking of the Serpent and a copy of the crew list but I have been unable to locate an offical record of his death.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might find it?  Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Janet

When you say 'official', his service record will have the initials D.D. (Discharged Dead) and a date at the end. If this is official enough it should be one of the men in the attached link - the date in the date column is the man's date of birth.

FindMyPast has records of Deaths at Sea, but I don't know how exhaustive the list is.

There is also the National Archives. (as above)

These may help:   http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UKDeathsAtSea.html

Thank you, thank you!!! Both Martin & genie-genie.  I found the "official" proof I was looking for from the link Martin gave but I checked into all of them and bookmarked a few of them for future reference, although I think the rest of the navy men in the family tree are 20th century.  Never know though, I'm new at this & my tree is still growing.  ;)  Thanks again!

Hi I'm from Camariņas, where the Serpent sank, and we're working on a cultural project about shipwrecks.. Where did you finally find the crew list? It would be most helpful. Thanks in advance

I can tell you 1 member who didn't make it - my great-uncle, Robert Joseph Fetherston.
