Alexander Bell 1851 Census Lookup
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 08:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have an Alexander Bell who emigrated to Canada before 1861. I think he came alone.
In 1861, he went through an adult baptism in Quebec, giving his date of birth as
18 March 1840, London, England and parents as Thomas and Elizabeth Bell.
I'd be very grateful, if some kind soul could find this family in the 1851 Census. Sorry that I can't give a more specific address, but all I have is London.

Thanks in advance,
Carmela

I found this family in 1841, but the original is very, very faint so transcription errors are very likely!

I found the following on Family Search -

Alexander Charlton Bell, baptised 2 October 1836 at St Mark's, Kennington, London.  His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Bell.

He may be the right one, if he was either pretending to be younger, or there was a mistake with his year of birth.

The only possible sighting of him in 1851 is A Bell, 16, draper's assistant at Bazaar, Deansgate, Manchester, born in London.
There is a long list of draper's assistants at that address, so it must have been a large store.

Thanks to everyone for trying. I think this is going to be very difficult, if not impossible.
I don't think there will be any record of baptism or he would not have undergone another baptism in 1861. He could have been less than truthful about his age, but if so, he was quite consistent about it in census records.
I think I need to make time for several research sessions on Ancestry at the library.
Stuck at home at the moment, so I was hoping that someone would turn him up without too much difficulty. I have only just discovered the adult baptism with birth date and parents, so too excited to wait until I can get to the library.

Thanks again,
Carmela
