where in Down ?
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 21:54 BST (UK) »
Hello I am trying to find out where my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, Robert Mcgarva was born in 1824. He died in Old Luce Wigtownshire Scotland in 1885, age 61. His father was James McGarva who was a carrier, his mother was Jane Scott. On the 1861 Scottish census for Old Luce it states he was born in County Down Ireland, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for replying Jim
yes as far as I know correct McGarva at that time, later on in late 1880's it was sometimes recorded as McGarvie, there are a lot of McGarva/ McGarvie's in Wigtownshire Scotland and as Robert's father James was listed as a carrier, I can only guess he travelled between Ireland and Scotland.

Hi Wendy.  Robert McGarva (born 1826 in Down) was my 3X Gt Grandfather too.  Robert and Elizabeth Wither's son Robert Alexander McGarva born in 1855 and married Margaret Anderson.  They had Martha Annie McGarva in 1891.  Martha went to Canada to visit family (loads of family over there) and came back pregnant with my Grandfather Robert born in 1917 in Wigtownshire.

My email is (*) if you would like to share info - I'd love to know how you are connected.

Robert Alexander McGarva born in 1855 and married Margaret Anderson.  They had Martha Annie McGarva in 1891 and my grandmother Grace McGarva born  1894 after Martha Annie.  My father would be your grandfather Robert's 1st cousin.

Love to hear from you to connect re our families. My father talks about an Aunt Anne. Not sure if that is your G grandmother.
