Help with my internet please..................

Trouble started yesterday.  Hope someone can talk me though it step by step. I have vista.

When the internet is on I get 3 icons on bottom tool bar
1  Windows cannot check for updates.
2 Windows security alert
3 Windows defender off.

I have turned the defender on.

Regarding updates I have tried several times checking for up dates and get "error has occurred while checking for new up dates, code 80072F8F"  Clicked on help line suggested my timer maybe wrong which is not.


Regarding windows security they say my AVG anti virus edition may be out of date, when checking my AVG it tells be I am protected. I have AVG 2011.

Also trouble entering 2 (maybe others) sites, Hotmail and ancestry who say "The server's security certificate is not yet valid"

Any help would be appreciated.

Has Defender updated?
and have you ran a full scan by Defender?

Try switching the computer completely off. Wait at least 20 seconds for the memory to clear, then restart. If the problem still exists, then it suggests that you may have a virus in the system.

 Don't understand what you mean by your timer being out. Do you mean the update has timed out. This is different to your clock time.

I contacted my server who suggested I contact the place where I bought my computer.  He blames vista and the problems its problems.  That the updates are getting stuck so he talked me though to reset the computer back to the 11th  before my troubles started but made no difference.

Malky, Not sure what you mean by timer?

Helina, try this. Go to this web page :-
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you will see a "Microsoft Fix it" button.
Click on it, and run the program. That should find and repair the problem.
The page mentions XP, do not worry, "Fix it" runs for Vista as well.
