You said that you followed Malky's earlier link to
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Update-error-80072f8f

A the end of those instructions it says .............
"f the problem persists after you take these steps, go to the Windows Update Support Center website to try to find more information about the error code or to request support by e‑mail."

What did they say?

I contacted my server who suggested I contact the place where I bought my computer.  He blames vista and the problems its problems.  That the updates are getting stuck so he talked me though to reset the computer back to the 11th  before my troubles started but made no difference.

Malky, Not sure what you mean by timer?

helina

Obviously you do not want to reply to my question so I will let others deal with it.  ???

Midase, Did not realise that I have not replied, sorry, I did go into that site and I found it all rather confusing. The time and date on my computer is correct so clicked into support link came up with a whole lot of questions that I did not understand.

The problem seems to be well part of.  code 80072F8F.   The icon for icons security alerts say my AVG is not up to date but it is.

If you have an AVG disk you can try un-installing and then re-installing it.  Most anti-virus programs work better with Defender switched off. Then contact AVG if it does not improve. If your AVG sub has expired you could try the free one from Microsoft - Microsoft Security Essentials. They tell you to switch Defender off if you are running MSE. If your AVG sub is still valid you should get them to sort it out.

If I was paying for one I would go back to Norton 360. You do not need to be a nerd to use it and it includes easy to use tuning features as well.

You have me confused with someone else. I have not given any links. I am confused with your description of "my timer is out" Do you mean that the connection has timed out or similar, as this is different to your computers clock.
