Ranton,Eccleshall.Mill Meece Smiths and Dunn
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 11:48 BST (UK) »
Hi i have worked my family tree back to a Richard Smith born Ranton 1793 and married a Mary Dunn from Chebsey in Eccleshall in 1828.

They had eight children James,Easter,Henry,Richard,John.Mary,William and Thomas.

The family lived in Mill Meece throughout the mid 1880s before Henry (1843) my great, great grandfather moved to Maer and married Ann Elizabeth Smith (1852) and had a daughter Mary (1873).
After this Henrys family stayed in the Maer ,baldwins gate area of Staffs,

The interesting thing is the Richard (1793) was born in Ranton as was the Captian of the Titinic Edward smiths grandfather at the same time.

Ranton was a hamlet so i would assume they were related.

Unfortunately im stuck as i dont have the marriage certificate of richard at this stage to see if any witnesses to the marriage tie in with the capatin of the Titanics predesessors.

Hi

I have found on the IGI site  siblings to Richard, John christened on the 25th May 1783, Joseph Christened on the  20th October, 1786 and John Christened 25th May 1783 (probably a twin to John)  All christenings taking place at Ranton.  These entries have been submitted by a member of the IGI.  Parents John and Esther Smith.

As Richard's marriage took place in 1828 I doubt there will be a certificate as civil registration did not start until 1837.

The only way to confirm the above is to see the Parish Registers for Ranton which are held at the County Records offfice at Stafford.

(I notice that this information has been posted on another thread so posting the link).

Edit. Sorry I have misread a line on the information.  No twins. - Richard born 10.02.1793.
John, 25.05.1783 and Joseph 20.10.1786.  All born at Ranton to John and Esther Smith

I found a Son Joseph 1786,a son richard 1793  and a son John 1783 in the Ranton records both sons of John and Esther Smith (nee Moss).

I managed to easily find Esther Mosses previous family another Esther mother and a father Richard born 1729 son of Thomas Moss.

Cant get any further back on the Smith side as their are two John Smith in Eccleshall born close together around 1733and 1737

May be worth a visit to Stafford and Lichfield.
There you may be able to -
a) check the parish records for deaths. It may be that one John died early if so you may be able to distinguish one from another.
b) check apprentice records
and at Lichfield
c) check for any wills. These have proved to be an absolute gold mine for me in my researches
Stanton of Stafford
Bourne of Stoke-on-Trent
Smith of Stoke-on-Trent
Philpott of Pontesbury
Pugh of Worthen & Pontesbury

I agree with Zen Rabbit, Wills may be the answer to sorting out the Smiths.

Good luck

Investigated the Captain and found out his Great Grandfather was John Smith 1730 (Ranton).
Can anyone tell me if John had any brothers.
