Williameno Zenner
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 16:58 BST (UK) »
Please could anyone advise me on how to find out more about a family member we knew nothing about?
Williameno Zenner is recorded in the 1901 census as "grandson" living with his grandparents Martin and Elizabeth Zenner in Newcastle upon Tyne and being aged 1. It's not clear who his parents were; a daughter of 28 and a son of 17 were recorded as living at the same address. I know that his birth was recorded in the first quarter of 1900, but I can find nothing else - no record of baptism, no marriage, no death.
None of us in the family knows who he was, which makes me suspect he died young. But why no record of his death?
I am intrigued because my aunt, born in 1911, was given the same name- even though she wasn't a boy!
Could anyone suggest what other lines of enquiry I could follow?

The obvious step would be to purchase his birth cert, to establish his parentage.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

The 1900 birth certificate should list parents' names (or at least his mother's name if illegitimate). Since it's an unusual first name perhaps his death is indexed under the more common Christian name of William or some other mis-transcription. Another thought is that if he was illegitimate and his mother remarried after the 1901 census he might have then used his stepfather's surname.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you lizdb and aghadowey. It's the absence of a death record that baffles me, but perhaps, as you suggest, he had another name by then. I hadn't thought of his name being mis-transcribed either, so that's another line to follow.
Many thanks to both of you for your suggestions  :)

The free 1911 census index suggests he was still alive then, as Williamino Zenner Jr., somewhere in Tynemouth registration district.

Thanks avm228. Since I'm a bit of a novice at this, I don't know how to access the free 1911 census. Everything I try ends up with a request for money! I joined Ancestry.co.uk, thinking it would let me see everything ( including BMD certificates- how deluded I was!) but certainly can't get details of individuals in the 1911 census. Would you mind telling me how to access it?

You will need to pay money I'm afraid, unless your location is such that you can use the free access available as follows: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/337.htm.

The full 1911 census (including transcriptions and household schedule images) is available on more than one commercial site now but the free index I used was that of www.findmypast.co.uk. In order to obtain a household transcription or image you will need to purchase credits or a subscription; other Rootschatters are not allowed to perform lookups for you.

manipulating the free index shows he is with the same people as 1901 census showed.

Thank you again avm228. Sounds as if I bought the wrong subscription, but I will follow your tip and go to one of the public access sites.
TomR's info that Williameno was with the same people as he was in 1901 is very useful. Now I know that he was still alive in 1911, I need to work out what became of him and how it is that no-one knew anything about him.
I am grateful to you all for your expertise. Thank you  :)
