Augustine -> Austin?
« on: Wednesday 14 September 11 21:54 BST (UK) »
Augustine Murphy, b 1865 in Bath, son of James and Jane Murphy.

I can find him with the family in 1871. In 1881 his widowed mother and his sibs are together in Clapham but I can't find Augustine.

After that, the rest of the family disappears from the English censuses (though 2 of his siblings reappear in Ireland in 1901/11). No further trace of Augustine - However there is an AUSTIN Murphy of the right age, born in Bath and living in Camberwell in the 1891 census. BMD has this Austin Murphy's marraige in St Olave (London/Surrey) in 1889.

I don't want to fork out for the marraige cert though I know some of you will want to suggest that! Has anyone come across a name change from AUGUSTINE to AUSTIN before? Is this likely to be the right person?

It certainly sounds promising.  Etymologically it makes sense as the name Austin is derived from Augustine.

Hi Annie

Yes, in the Clavey family of Somerset I've found individuals who were named Austin (a common name in the family) in registers, but Augustine in leases/wills. I think Austin is the regular contraction for Augustine

Re Austin as diminutive of Augustine.

See section about naming practices in Ireland on website KiwiCelts.
 Number 8. Some Regional Naming Practices:
Austin for Augustine  - said to be "common among Catholic peasantry of Connaught".

Robert Matheson, Registrar-General of Ireland in 1901 wrote a book "Varieties And Synonymes of Surnames and Christian Names in Ireland", published 1901; available to download from Internet Archive.
My grandmother had a uncle Austin who died as a baby. He was registered as Austin.  His parents were Irish. His father was probably from County Mayo which is in the Province of Connaught.
