1914/15 star CZ 2798 A Spurr AB RNVR
« on: Saturday 17 September 11 20:12 BST (UK) »
Hi all
We have today found in some posessions of our grandfather in our loft the above medal. It has 1914 - 15 across the front. I used a search engine image to check it looks the same. There is no ribbon. I am presuming it was awarded to an Able Seaman of the Royal Naval Volunteer reserve with a medal number of CZ 2798. I gather from Nat Archives site that CZ means Clyde Division.
I had a look at my sub to A*** to find out more about him but found that the entry for the award of the star to a A Spurr in Chatham, the medal number is shown as 5829. I then looked again searching for the medal number of 2798 and found it belonged to a gentleman called Burt. What am I doing wrong here? I presumed that medal numbers would be unique and that there wouldn't be a Clyde division set of numbers??
Oh and if you could also explain why we have an apparent naval medal in a family with no one in the navy and no knowledge of the Spurr name either that would be a bonus ;D

(Grandfather served in the army but no one ever had knowledge of what happened to his medals. he was gassed and was a little strange after the war.)

Found it! many thanks and now I have a Christian name to work with too! I'd been looking in the section on the 'Naval War Medals -  1914 Star' and not the 'Naval War Medals - Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.' So I was in the right place, wrong section!

Thanks Ady. Have just downloaded his record from Nat Archives- its very interesting! Alfred's hair colour is described as 'grizzle'!
The details of what he did and where he was  is very full - the best I have of anyone in our family. You were right in that he is shown as moving from Howe Battalion to Stavros while serving with MEF, then 2nd reserve batallion to Howe battalion and then with Howe batt to Gallipoli in 1915. he was also at Marseille in 1916, was with 7th Entrenching batt in 1918 and Drake Battalion.
It is very detailed right up to 8.12.19 not that I fully understand it all. The only blip was in 1916 when he was 'drunk and did create a disturbance in camp' - Mudros west? getting 14 days detention.
The other interesting thing is that his nok is his sister who has a surname we have come across but haven't worked out where she fits in so the hunt goes on!
Thanks again
