Hi,

Have a look at http://www.emelbourne.net.au/biogs/EM00375b.htm  for some info on Collingwood.

It seems the area was not that great ...

My ancestor arrived in Melbourne in 1854 with voyage paid (+ indenture 90 days ) by this Mr Attenborough

But she left the area in September of the same year (she married somebody and went to work on the goldfiedl with a supply grocery shop)... What is strange to me is why this Mr Attenborough let her leave so soon ... after having paid her trip to Australia ... This is the mystery I'm trying to solve

Some thoughts

May I ask if the lass left Mr Attenborough after the 90 days indenture or did she leave before the 90 days had expired?

Perhaps she bought sufficient funds with her to pay out the indenture, or perhaps her husband paid this out on her behalf?

Could Mr Attenborough have been acting on behalf of a client or a group of clients or an Emigration Scheme?

Sorry, but I am not sure how to go about finding the answer to your mystery.

Cheers,  JM

She arrived in January 1854 and married a certain Isaac Woodward (gold broker, according to family records and infos ....) 15 September 1854 ..

Yes you suggestion might be possible ... if Attenborough is a sollicitor he might have been acting on behalf of an Emigration  Scheme.

I need to obtain her marriage certificate (to see if details in there) .. with Isaac Woodward. For info she didn't get married because pregnant of Isaac .. she only have a child from him in 1856

Yes I was asking question about her second marriage.. . she became widow of Isaac in 1856 .. she was pregnant of her 1st child at that time ... I think they were living near the goldfields .. (tbc) ..life was rough at those time ...
I am not the only roochat member to search this Mary Ann McPike ...
