anyone want to date a photo or figure it's whereabouts??
« on: Monday 19 September 11 16:18 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I took a photo of this original, it was on thick card (sorry I can't show the back or edges). The original was found in an old hotel calld "The Miller Arms" in Singleton, Lancashire. There is / has been, a large farming community in that area.
The photo interests me as this is the area my family farmed over many decades. Whether the photo was evan taken in Singleton, I am unsure??
Can anyone please date it and give me a possible "Whereabouts" it may have been taken please??
Thankyou, regards Kazzann

Hi kazzann :)

Probably around 1910 up to WW1, and as for where...could be just about anywhere  :-\

Great photo!

Cheers

Is this perhaps Singleton in New South Wales? there a some slouch hats and what look like indigenous Aussies.

Just a thought.

Perhaps somewhere in the Cape Territory of South Africa.  The slouch hat, worn by Australian troops, was popularized in that area after the Boer War. It is a practical way of avoiding clipping your hat when tossing sheaves.
I reckon, the implements in use, the elm(?) trees and donkey just about rule out Australia.

With you Morrie - I don't think Australia either

- the dark people don't look Aboriginal - different features - could have been folks from West Indies living in England maybe.

Just a quick google tells me elms are native of central asia and were introduced into Austaralia in 19th and 20th centuries in great numbers, donkeys were introduced in 1865 and were for a long while the main pack animal, then came heavy horses and camels,
The aboriginals perhaps don't look "aboriginal " but natives of the Torres Straits particularly Thursday Island came into Australia in 19th century to work predominantly  in agriculture, these peoples didn't have the same facial characteristics of the "walkabout" abriginal  but a softer more Oceania identity.

Of course it could be South Africa, there is  Singleton there too, but equally it could be Australia or Singleton in Lancashire

you could well be right James - it just doesn't look Aussie!!   ;) ;) ;D ;D

But . . . . looks can deceive - however the original poster seems to think it is Lancashire.    ;)
