DjVU Viewer - Which download is safe to choose?
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Recently got a new PC (Windows 7).

I'm not too clever at the tech bits and although I've managed to transfer my documents /pictures etc o.k , I'm not able to view some of them because I need the DjVu viewer to do so.

The trouble is that I've been looking at the DjVu sites on the Web but there are so many that I'm baffled as to which one would be safe to download.

Any suggestions please?

Barbara.

Try the one from the Find My Past website as you should have any issues with it, I never have:

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/helpadvice/faqs/djVu-viewer/index.jsp
Bloomfield, Knights, Whitmore, Warner (Suffolk)
Hamlin (London, Yorkshire, Scotland, Suffolk)
Mattocks, Newick, Nutter, (Kent)
Mattocks (Staffs)

If you are using an effective virus checker and internet security programme, you should not need to worry about downloading, because any 'dodgy' downloads would be intercepted.

Hi all,

Allanb & siledee, thanks for the links to the sites.

I've looked at both but I can't make out if the DjVU Viewer is  compatible with Windows 7?

Nick, thanks for putting my mind  at rest regarding the safety of downloading, I've got Norton so it should be O.K.

Cheers

Barbara.

Hi Nick, bear with me please.

What is DjVU Libre, is it an advanced programme?

Also, after looking at the description of DjVU download on the 'Find my past ' link, it would appear that I need to download Adobe Flash player in the first instance, is that correct?

These must appear to be real 'Noddy' questions but I'm not that experienced in the art of downloading programmes.

Thanks

Barbara.

If you go to http://djvu.org/resources/ there are 3 different DjVU viewers.....

1. Lizardtech Official DjVu Browser Plug-in (Free - Win/Mac) - a browser plugin.

2. DjVuLibre DjView (Free - Unix/Linux/Win/Mac) - a stand-alone viewer for viewing files

3. WinDjView and MacDjView Desktop Viewers (Free - Win/Mac) - another stand-alone viewer.

I downloaded and tried DjVuLibre and it's OK with Windows 7.  The browser plugin works with Windows 7 - they say it does.

Another possibility is to use IrfanView with the plug-ins package.  Then you can can look at all your images using the same viewer.

There is a short description of IrfanView here:

To change the size and format you need a graphics program.
The easiest, for this sort of stuff, is IrfanView, which is FREE and
you can download from:  http://www.irfanview.com/
(==> TIP: While you're at it, download the plug-ins as well.
One of them is for Djvú, which is handy for looking at GRO images !)
(ps. Mac-Users: Sorry, but I have no experience with a Mac, so I can't offer any advice for it)
