Family Tree Maker 2006
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 21:54 BST (UK) »
I have been using Family Tree Maker from the onset (early 1990S).  Now all a sudden my 2006 with Vista upgrade running on Windows 7 OS, decides it will not store to any Scrapbook.  Up-comes the following: A problem has occurred in writing to your disk, please check that the disk has space  available, that it is formatted, and that the drive door is closed.  This note is a little out of place as the storage point is my contained hard drive with 200 gig of free space.

Here's hoping someone has an answer, because FTM 2008 and up is not for me.

Hi Crackel,

Welcome to rootschat  :D

I am not particularly technically minded but I do use FTM 2006 and my understanding is that it will not run on Windows 7.

I did buy the 2010 version in preparation for replacing my computer (still using XP) but it's still unused on the shelf.

Like you I've been using FTM forever - version 4 before it belonged to Ancestry!

Going back to your query I suspect that you may have to upgrade  :'(

I'm using FTM-2005 on Windows 7.  You do not have to upgrade FTM-2006 in order to use it on Windows 7.

That error message sounds like a standard message you get when you do not have permission to write to a file as you are not the owner but it looks like it is trying to write to a floppy disk or a writeable CD.

Check your options and make sure the setting are not setup to write yo non-hard drive media.

Thanks Christine for your quick response, but I have had 2010 from it's con seption and it is not an easy program to sort out.  I do not like it.  Guess I am old fashioned.

Thanks also to you Downside:  I have looked and the only options I find is under Content and it is not high lighted for use.

F.Y.I. i not 15 minutes ago removed FTM 2006 and re-installed it.

Does Scrapbook work now?

I presume you are using it to contain photographs?

There is no reason it shouldn't work, as I have no problems with FTM-2005.

I'm also having issues with FTM 2006 after upgrading to Windows 7.  My issue is with the production of books.  I did contact the makers of FTM and you have to download a free something or other (can't remember what it was called).  There was an error message something like "FTM executable has stopped working....."  I have to get back onto them because doing as they suggested got rid of the message, but I still can't produce books, or in fact even edit ones I've already done.  It now says "Preview is already running".

They responded within 24 hrs but I haven't had time to do the subsequent follow up.

Anyone else had the same issues?

Downside:  It does not work after the new install.  Yes to using it to store photos, census, deeds, Etc.

That is correct, there is no reason it should not work, as it did from the onset, purchase in 2006, until just a couple of months ago.

I am going to look for a old back up and see if it will store in scrapbook.  Reason for this action will be to determine if problem is in software or family file.
