Hi James

Your nan Bertha must have been born sometime around 1920.
She probably got married between 1938 and 1950, I guess.

It also means that Norman Nugent was probably born around the same time.  

Sadly, a lot of the registers for births after about 1910 haven't been copied onto the internet yet (although this is slowly happening).

Do your parents have a copy of your nan's death certificate?  This may give specific information like her date and place of birth, so then you will be able to think about finding her birth certificate.

Her birth certificate should give you her parents' names (including her mother's maiden name) and then you can start the process looking for the family in the censuses - people on this site will always help out.

Have had a quick look on the 1837online and have found these two people

Bertha Ashcroft mothers maiden name Bell born 1924 Chester Le So. (sorry I don't know here this is maybe your dad can help) 10a 1211 (this is needed if you send for birth certificate.

and

Norman V Nugent mothers maiden name Tuck born 1923 Pancras ( I am guessing this is St Pancras in London if I'm wrong someone will put me right) 1b 144

my gr8 grandparents (ashcrofts ) did notown a mill called  langley mill . it was a different one. i think langley mill was some relation to them! thank u plzfind outmore

I'm just having a look in 1901 - there are two Ashcroft families in Gateshead. I'll post their details in a moment in case they connect with your family. There is no James but if Bertha wasn't born until 1924 he might not have been born until after the 1901 census.  Jan
