1841 look-up please WILLIAMS
« on: Friday 06 May 05 22:40 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate a look-up for the following family in 1841, probably in Clyro (they are not in Hay).

Details from 1851 census (thanks Rhys!)

BRECONSHIRE 1851
HO107  2491 304 20

Parish of Hay
Red Lion Street

WILLIAMS James, h, m, 34, cooper, RAD Clyro
WILLIAMS Elizabeth, w, m, 24, , RAD Nantmel
WILLIAMS James, s, , 1, , BRE Hay

I believe they may be connected to another James WILLIAMS, also a cooper, living at Cwfoway (?) Clyro in 1861 and aged 78 then - hence he would be about 58 in 1841.

James senior is also married to an Elizabeth.  I don't have a date for James junior's marriage, but assume he would be at  home!

TIA Arranroots  ;)

Thank you , thank you!

Now can you help me make sense of this?  There is obviously more than one family here: is there any way of distinguishing one from t'other?  Perhaps by the place name after the Y/N bit?

You can see I am an innocent when it comes to 1841!

At first I thought it was another of those families with no tellie.

Thanks again

Hi,
There is one family which I presume is yours at Crossway.
I included the second family of Williams's, (Trainpent) because they were the next entry on the census schedule. So at least they were neighbours, perhaps even related.
Y means yes born in county, n means not.  Ages  sometimes  though not always are rounded down to the nearest five years. So age thirty, may mean somewhere from thirty to mid thirties

Thanks again kmo

I had the opportunity to discuss this info with a relative yesterday.  she remembers being told that the WILLIAMS family came from "The Bronydd" which nowadays we know as a small hamlet.  Apparently their property had some kind of private chapel or small church attached to it.

I wonder if anyone knows enough about the area to tell me how the names Crossway and Trainpent relate to the buildings in the modern village?

Grateful for info from anyone who knows

Hello
I looked on a modern OS map and a mile North West of Bronydd, there is a Crossway Farm.
Trainpent I couldn't find. It may be a mistranscription of the actual name. It doesn't sound like a local name.
Bronydd has a Baptist Chapel. The reference book I checked says it's very old, possibly converted from a barn.
