Immigration to Australia
« on: Monday 26 September 11 17:58 BST (UK) »
David Robert Stephen born July 1890 in Montrose, Scotland. Joined Australian Army 1915 and killed on active service in France  March 1918 by then he was a Lieutenant in Australian Army and had been  awarded Military Cross for bravery in the field.

I have managed to get all his military records but cannot seem to find when/how he went to Australia, Is it possible to search records of emigrants from this side? ie. ports / ships etc.
He was living in Perth, New South Wales in 1915 when he enlisted so presumably he arrived there. This is the missing piece of a very good life.

Hi Maxcam :)

It is possible to search some passenger lists online - Find My Past and Ancestry both have some, and there are others available free.  Have you had a look at the the Australia Resources board?  You'll find some links there.

Unfortunately, unless he came on an assisted passage (and I'm not sure there were any operating at the time he would have come out) it's possible he won't be listed, or if he is it may only be his surname and possibly an initial that is shown.

Do you mean he lived in Perth, Western Australia?  As far as I know there isn't a Perth in NSW  ;)

Cheers
Prue

If not Perth, Western Australia, I wonder if that should read "Penrith, NSW" ?
did Penrith exist in 1915?

It did, Dawn (it's been around since the very early days), but I checked David Stephen's WW1 record and it is Perth WA  :)

 - there's a David R. Stephen heading to    Fremantle here in 1911 (no age given).
Full info might show more details to confirm whether this is your man.

James Strachan returned to motherwell after being wounded. He elected to remain in Scotland rather than returning to Australia. No known link between the families.
