Hebburn Colliery 1881 Census
« on: Monday 26 September 11 23:21 BST (UK) »

Hello - I'm needing some help

I have a marriage certificate for

Henry MILLER (b. 1858) marries Margaret BRUNTON (b.1854) on  27/11/1882  St Cuthberts Church, Hebburn

Both are resident at Hebburn Colliery on certificate

I have tried to locate Hebburn Colliery census sheets for 1881 hoping that they might show up but cannot even find Hebburn Colliery on census (Ancestry search).  Can anyone find either of them or point me to a distinctive resident from that time so I can search the streets for mention of them.

thanks

Craggs - Bishop Auckland, Darlington & Byker
Hutchins & Lewins- Sunderland
Miller, Allan & Brunton - Walker & Byker
Bagnall - Watermen of the Ouseburn

Have you tried using this link for the 1881 census

Were they both born in Durham or elsewhere

Hello  :)

What was Henry's age and occupation on his marriage certificate? Also what was the name and occupation of his Father and Margaret's Father, and Margaret's age?

Kind Regards
Morgan

Hi

As far as I can work out, Hebburn (Colliery) would be one of the South Shields EDs - probably Jarrow sub-district.

I don't see them there as yet, though  :-\

Thanks for suggestions so far:

Details on certificate:

Henry MILLER b.1858   North Shields

Margaret BRUNTON  b.1854  Wallsend/Tynemouth

Parents
John Miller, Cooper, Unknown
Peter Brunton, Caulker, Scotland

Interesting find gnu.  I think that is him - I think his mother was Jane - maybe John had died or moved on  in 1860s/70s and she's remarried to Thomas.

Do people think his surname is McGlachlin? (never seen this surname before...)

Maybe South Shields is mistake for N Shields - and Camperdown is presumably the town in north Newcastle near Killingworth.

Sibling James Miller might prove useful in search.

Thanks again

Hi

The surname looks like McGlachlin and POB would be Camperdown - to the NW of Killingworth proper. It's  very much all combined these days  ::)

I expect that Thomas got mixed up with the Shields  ;D

Have you checked this entry out on the 1861:

RG9/3823/91/41 -   Friars, St John, Newcastle

Jane Miller, unm, 21. WestMoor, Northumberland
Henry, son, 21/2, b. Shields, Northumberland

West Moor is close to Killingworth. Jane is 40 on the 1881

Again this looks promising.  Thanks.

On FamSearch I have a Henry Miller baptised Christ Church Tynemouth 1858 where mother is Jane Miller and father is just 'Miller'.  When I checked the baptism a while ago at archives there was no father given.

Does this mean Jane was born Miller or took the name of the father (John Miller perhaps) - or was the John Miller made-up.  I have asked Registrars Office to check parents on Henry Miller birth registered in 1858 so this may reveal something - if same child.

Nothing on James Miller yet.
