Minto burials Irvine Turnbull
« on: Monday 03 October 11 15:34 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a burial record for Elizabeth Turnbull who died 26 Oct 1768.   Her husband, Andrew Irvine, died 15 May, 1758 in Minto.  I have death dates and Andrew's birth date (1701) but I need to know how old Elizabeth was when she died.

Thanks,

Jan

Where did you get the death dates from?

You would only get age from the MI if it exists

There are numerous family letters and documents either brought from Scotland when the various branches settled here in Canada or received later in correspondence.   I have occasionally found errors but rare and the errors are generally minute.

Visits to Scotland by family have resulted in tomb inscriptions but not for Elizabeth Turnbull Irvine.

Thanks,
Jan

Your Elizabeth is listed as Bessie and is buried in Cavers Cemetery. I have her listed as dying 1768 aged 66yrs .
I am a Turnbull myself and I am making a Turnbull index of those listed in MIs produced by the Border Family History or Selkirk Antiquarians and listed the above taken from the Cavers MI (BFHS) I have it as entry 35 and you can purchase it from them.
Incidently my mother was Elizabeth but called and buried as Bessie!!
turnbull- Scottish Borders ,Caithness and East Lothian

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the information.   It is a big help.

Question:  This is going to sound rather inane considering the amount of research I have done.  What are MI's?  I have googled it and get many acronyms but nothing genealogical.

On a tombstone, often family are listed.  I have the names and birth years of 10 children.   What exactly do you get from MI's?   Marriage record says Bessie Turnbull.    Is my Bessie listed as Turnbull or Irvine?  Or .........is she listed as Bessie Turnbull wife of Andrew Irvine?   I have learned a lot about names.  Janet =Jessie.  The most surprising Nancy=Agnes.  It does add to the challenge of verifying people.

I am so pleased to receive your information.  I believe now that Bessie was born 1702 in Minto.  Always more work to do!  But, I love it!

Are you doing descendants of Turnbull's.  I can give you lots on Bessie.

Thanks again, Alan.

Jan :)

In this instance MI's = Memorial Inscriptions.

Just for fun I googled MI's too and I see what you mean - there are many acronyms - but it gave me a good laugh.

Thanks, Brina.

So, are the MI's inscriptions taken directly from tombstones?    I was frustrated with Google, but you helped me see the humour!!  Thanks.

Jan  :) :)

M.I.'s are transcribed directly from the headstone and the wife is recorded by her maiden name
