Is this a Scottish Uniform?
« on: Wednesday 05 October 11 14:52 BST (UK) »
Please can someone tell me what sort of uniform this is, and roughly the date.

The photo states it was taken in Partick, Glasgow.   I have no idea who this is but I do have family that lived there.   Any idea of his age?

The mark on the left wrist is a scratch on the photo, not a watch.

Thanks,

Joan

Thanks neil1821 and ev.

There is a John Aitken, Photographers, operating at various addresses in Partick between 1893 and 1905 although that particular address is not listed as one of them.

Reading the history you'll see the BB was formed in 1883 (in Glasgow as it happens), so certainly can't be before then.  ;)
Turn of the century maybe? Any thoughts to his identity?

Reading some old maps I am unable to find a Hamilton Place in Partick (although there is one in Mount Florida) nor is there one listed in the Directories for the turn of the century but 390 Dumbarton Road, Partick is listed as one of John Aitken's premises from 1898-1905.

390 Dumbarton Road must be just behind the West of Scotland Cricket Club ground, otherwise known as Hamilton Crescent. Maybe the block between Dumbarton Road and the cricket ground used to be Hamilton Place...

Thankyou neil1821, Falkyrn and apwright for all your help.

I think I am beginning to get to the bottom of this.   It sounds to me as if Hamilton Place would have sounded rather more up-market than Dumbarton Road and it can't be a coincidence that both addresses are number 390.

I think the boy in question must have been a 'Forrest'.   In the 1891 census they lived at what looks like 10 Govanhill Street - the name isn't very clear - and in the 1901 census they were at 314 Dumbarton Road!   Head of house was James Forrest.   There were just two sons: James Simpson Forrest b1877 and William Hendry Forrest b1884, both born in Partick.

I have looked at the Boys Brigade website that ev gave me, but it doesn't seem to say at what ages boys would have been in the Brigade.   Any suggestions as to the age of the boy in the photo?

Many thanks to you all for your help.
