How to find death date (Completed)
« on: Thursday 06 October 11 00:45 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death date of a Alfred Potentier and his wife Hannah.
I have found their burial in Mountview, Cambridge, Dumfries North, Canada, but it does not give the year of burial.
I have checked many online data base's and nothing is coming to light.  How do I trace a death in Canada?

Have you tried contacting the cemetery administration directly?

Can you give us an approx time frame for this couple which could help with the information.

I did not see a email address for the cemetery.  Will have another look.
Can not go in person, half a world away for that.

If you can't find an address on line, try contacting the public library in Cambridge as most have an "Ask a Librarien" section.

Have you made contact with the living Potentier's in Cambridge.

www.canada411.ca
is an on-line directory and there are listings for Potentier in Cambridge.

There is no central registry of BMD events in Canada as it is a provincial jurisdiction. In Ontario deaths after 1939 are currently protected by privacy laws so if they died after that you would be limited to newspaper announcements and cemetery transcriptions. The Ontario Genealogical Society (Waterloo Branch) would be able to help but they do charge for research services (http://www.waterlooogs.ca/).

I've searched the Ontario deaths database at Ancestry (which goes up to 1938) and the one at the LDS site (which goes up to 1937) and haven't been able to find either Alfred or Hannah.

Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, East Lothian): Johnston(e), Bell, Galloway, Campbell, Robertson, Williamson, Thomson, Crawford
Germans from Russia: Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Meach, Lorenz

Thanks for that.  Will save a bit of time searching for me.
So I can say they both died after 1938.

Cheers

I went to Free BMD and looked up the records for the marriages and births of the children in Leeds. I am assuming that you may have the info but will post it just in case you don't have it. There is also information on a tree for the Windsor family at Rootsweb as well.
Hannah Elizabeth Windsor

Leonard Windsor, b. Dec 1906, 9b/452
Ada Potentier. Dec 1910, 9b/340

Registration is by quarter so the birth can be anytime in that quarter.

Ada Potentier
b. 1910 England, d. 1989
m. Walter Knowles, son of James Knowles and Mary Caines, he was b. 1904 Brantford Ontario, died 1986
looks like 2 Potentier siblings married 2 Knowles siblings

from the Legion Last Post Death Notices
Corporal Alfred Potentier
Date deceased January 4, 1984, age 79, b. about 1905

I would definitely contact the Potentier's listed in the directory at Canada 411. Also, you can probably get obituaries and information from the local library. Hope this information helps in your search.

Thanks for all the info Valeriec.
I have been able to trace back to a Arsene Potenteir (French born) who came to England form - Port of departure Boulogne via Emirate, First Class.
He is our man who started the whole hunt for the Potentier's in Canada.
There were two families of Potentier that left England for Canada, both related via Arsene.
I will try the suggestion's.
