1881 + 1891 Census + Marriage needed for Markie
« on: Saturday 07 May 05 09:05 BST (UK) »
I have the marriage cert for John Markie and Mary Ann Kearney
18th July 1890 St Mungos Chapel, Glasgow, (St Rollox)
John aged 22 address looks like 28 Hatfield St, Glasgow.
Son of Peter Markie and Roseann Huges (Deceased)

Mary aged 19 of 186 Blochairn ? Road, Glasgow Daughter of James Kearney and Mary Ann Veitch

I need to find John Markie in the 1881 or 1891 Census to find out where he was from.

Also trying to find the Birth of John Markie
and the marriage of his parents Peter Markie & Roseann Hughes.

The name sometimes does differ in spelling which could be a reason for not being able to find it.

I do have the LDS 1881 census for scotland but still unable to find John or Peter.

Occupations of both John and Peter either Steel Worker or Steel Smelter.
Regards Ian Markie

Getting in a mess with this family now !
John Markie also married Susan Mary McCann but i cant find the marriage

Peter Markie married 3 times  Cant find any of these either!
1 Roseann hughes
2 Helen Wilson Nee Carpenter
Eliza Jane Hughes Nee Moore

also looking for peter Markie and Margaret reillys Marriage 1839 ish !
and James Markie to Sarah Bell before 1819.
They all should be in the Glasgow area
But i do say should !
regards Ian Markie

Hi drewsankie,

I feel that this is a possibility.
I can't find the marriages on the IGI, either. but if most took place in Ireland you may have to read the Indexes at a Mormon  centre.
Also John could a fibbed about his age , when he married. and also changed jobs, after the 1881 c, to do what his dad and brother did.

If this is the family, which i think it is.
Peter Must of married Roseann Hughes in Ireland, and she must of died there.
He then marries Helen Wilson as we see them in the 1881 census with a visitor John wilson born Glasgow, which could be her son ? from a 1st marriage, as her maiden name is Carpenter. so this is her 2nd marriage
Then Helen must of died but i cannot find the death as on Peters death cert he was married 3 times, the 3rd wife is Eliza Jane Hughes Nee Moore and they must of been married between 1881 and 1894 but i cannot find that either and that must of been in Glasgow.

Also Peters father is in Glasgow and died in 1890 aged 71 army pensioner who was also married to a Helen !
Helen Reilly.
at the time of his death he was living at 136 Moore st, Glasgow. Present at death Son Peter Markie.
Is there any chance of finding This Peter in the 1881 census aged about 62.
This would then confirm that this is yet another irish family.

Now then. That one put the spanner in the works! ::)
As i didnt expect there to be a Peter aged 8 to be there.
So i conclude that this Peter Markie / Markey is not the same.
as the one i was looking for!
What may of confused me is that my Peter was the son of Peter Markie and Margaret Reilly and this Peter married a Helen Reilly all living in the same area of Dennistoun.

I think it seems like that Peter may of come over just with his wife and children
So easy to get confused  ???
So far out of all the Markie branches i have picked they have all gone back to Ireland which surprises me, As i thought the Name of Markie was Scottish  :-\
