John Hood
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 20:11 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am having troubles locating the birth and death certificates and 1881 census record of my great great grandfather John Hood.  Here is the information that I have uncovered:

1884 John Hood, Millworker, Ladhope married Mary Milliken on 21 November 1884, his mother is listed as Mary Hood, Millworker.  He was 27 years of age and lived at High Street Peebles.  No father had been listed.
John was widowed and remarried Barbara Sanderson (my great great grandmother) 21 April 1888 aged 31 in Galashiels, his mother listed again as Mary Hood, formerly Wool Factory Worker
In the 1891 census he was living in Ladhope aged 34, mill worker.
In the 1901 census he had moved to South Street in Dalkeith Midlothian, aged 42 and he was a Fruit Hawker.
For the 1911 census he was back in Galashiels again as a mill worker.  All census documents that I have seen list him as being born in Jedburgh Roxburghshire.
I am assuming that he died in Galashiels or Ladhope.  Any assistance would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Again

It's not quite what you have asked for but I'm trying to home in on the family.

I'm wondering if this is him in 1861 -

31 Canongate Jedburgh
William Hood, 62, breweryman
Ann,  50, b. Morebattle
Mary, d, 24, mill worker
Isabella, d, 14
Sarah, d,  12
Archibald, d, 7
John Carter, boarder, 3
Agness McKie, boarder, 5 mths

All b. Jedburgh except Ann

So far I've not found a birth  under Hood or Carter. I'll report back if I find any more.

John Hood seems to be a real mystery.  If you have copies of his birth and death certificates, could you forward them to me?  I'd be greatly appreciative.  I'm assuming that he was illegetimate, a commonality in my family, lol.  I don't know why but I just could not locate him on Scotland's people, I kept getting no match found or a lot of matches but nothing in Gala, Ladhope or Jedburgh for that matter.
Thank you again gnu.  Is there anything that I can help you find at all?

I did a net approach - look for as much info on the wider kin group as possible and then use SP with as little inf oas possible. It usually works in these cases   ;D

PS - I assume that you picked up Mary and Agnes in the Jedburgh Union Wkhse in 1871  :(

It might be that it was registered in 1857 because the birth was so late in December.
Search  for Hood, no first name, Rox, Jedburgh 1856-57.
