Joan M Barnes, b. 1923 Brentford Middx
« on: Friday 14 October 11 19:44 BST (UK) »
Could anybody please help trace the whereabouts of this lady ?

She was born AMJ 1923 at Brentford, Middlesex.
She was the daughter of, George M Barnes and Florence M Stevens who married in 1917 at Eton, Buckinghamshire.

Family story has it that she went with an american chap and had twin girls, born in Brentford, JAS 1944.

They were both taken into care, and the mother completely disappeared,
any thoughts ?

Hi

Being realistic, there's not much we can do unless you have her birth cert and know what the M stands for and her exact date and place of birth.

There are 80 Joan M Barnes in the GRO marriage index from 1939 (aged 16) to 1973 (aged 50), she could be any one or none of them if she never married.

Have you identified the deaths of her parents? they may have named her in a will.

Have you traced any brothers and sisters?

Thanks for your reply.
I realised it was probably a bit sketchy, I have told the person concerned to apply for Joans birth certificate.
Strange as well I could not find a record for her father's death ?
He was married in 1917 to a Florence Stevens at Eton Bucks, Florence re-married in 1932, her first husband George M ( manuel) Barnes was admitted to Broadmoor, I am not sure if he came out or died there ? as I cannot trace a record.
regards

Hi

It looks as though George petitioned for divorce:

Hi

So he was alive in 1931.

He doesn't apear in the death index after 1969 as George Manuel Barnes, so that may imply he died between 1931 and 1969 when middle names are just shown as initials unless the person registering his death after 1969 didn't know he had a middle name.

How old was he at the time of the 1917 marriage?

Looking at those births,it appears that she had not married at that stage as they were born as Barnes with the same mothers maiden name. Maybe she left the babies here and followed her American boyfriend to the USA?

On Free BMD there are quite a few possible Barnes babies with the same mothers maiden name, born in Brentford over quite a number of years. All, or non of them could be siblings of hers!

Thanks for all the replies, and yes I noted that a Joan M Barnes sailed to Canada in 1946, perhaps that was her and as you say she followed the "Yank".
As for father George Manuel, if, he died in Broadmoor Hospital, what registration district would have covered that ?

The Joan Barnes (can't see a Joan M) who sailed to Canada in 1946 seems to be a different person - her English address Sydenham, and married as she had a Barnes mother-in-law in British Columbia.
