Help with an elusive marriage, please.

He should be in the Castle Douglas/Kelton area - b.c. 1865 but if he was a hotel boots he could be in many of the hotels in the area  

Witnesses were William & Isabella McWilliam

The 1932 death in Castle Douglas is the John McWilliam who married Helen - she's listed on the death cert as his 2nd wife.

That's very likely her - particularly as Helen snr was Nellie back in 1881

I'll see if I can locate on the 1911 Scottish - he seems to have stayed in Scotland

 I've found John McWilliam's birth on the IGI. He was born Kelton 25  Sept 1863.  Parent were  as his marriage and death cert. (James McWilliam and Mary Jane Comline)

So the one that Carole found living in Colvend on the 1901, looks the best bet ~

In 1911, he's still in Colvend Parish but back to hotel work ~

Poor man - he marries in 1888 to Elizabeth McGuffog.  His first wife dies in 1891. He marries again in 1893.  He seems to be separated (or at least living apart) from Helen/Nellie by 1901 and Nellie is living with William Butters by 1906 and he dies of cancer of the testes in 1932.

Good lord I've woken to a torrent of information. Looks like you've all cracked it, I'm very impressed and  greatful and so will my wife Sarah. We have a photo of Helen and she is spookily identical in looks to my mother in law and so she's always stood out to us and we've always been intrigued about her past but while I'm usually ok at researching English records I've never had much call to look in Scotland, I appear to be as unScottish as it's possible to be, so apart from familysearch and freereg I was a little lost! Thanks for everyone's hard work and general brilliance! I guess I was right about the dodgy marriage, wonder what happened between her and her husband!

Hi again,

Just been going through this with my wife Sarah and she wanted to pass on her thanks. William Routledge Butters was also a quarryman and I think the 1901 census for John will be right. I'm guessing little Nellie/Helen Jane McWilliam died. Fascinating stuff.
