There are references to a J TONKIN or TOMKINS on the 1870 USA Census, the birth year is earlier than I am happy with but it seems that John's birth year varies on later Census from between 1838 - 1844 so I would not discount anything.

Also appears to be several mentions of John TONKIN in the early Idaho Press.... there is a mention of the death of a John TONKIN who fell down a mine shaft August 21st 1901.  His family were on holidays at the time, but either an obituary or a death certificate might tell if this is your man or not.

I found an 1851 UK Census entry for a John TONKIN born 1842 in Glamorgan South Wales, son of Stephen and Jane TONKIN.  This might be a good line to start looking at for John's early movements.

Cheers

According to the Idaho Daily Statesman of 27th August 1901 the family of the John Tonkin who fell down the mine shaft were Mrs Sarah Tonkin, John O Tonkin, George E Tonkin, Ethel Tonkin and Lulu Tonkin.
